City of Vienna increases nursing salaries in two shortage areas

Vienna is increasing the salaries of hospital nurses in two areas where there are shortages, namely trauma surgery and neurosurgery.

This was announced by City Councillor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) on Wednesday on the ORF program “Wien heute”. According to the city, there is a shortage of nursing staff in both specialities. In response to an APA enquiry, he added that there is now the possibility of overpayment in order to incentivize nursing staff to switch to these areas.

Qualified nursing staff receive almost 680 euros more per month
Qualified nursing staff will receive a gross increase of around 690 euros per month. Nursing assistants will receive around 283 euros more. Other areas with the possibility of overpayment could follow. According to the city government, this will be determined in the second phase of the personnel package, which will be negotiated next year with effect from 2025.

An increase in bonuses has already been announced for next year. In a further step, salary schemes and working time models in the Vienna Healthcare Association (WIGEV) are to be revised.
